History of construction of the Kansai-kan
April 1987: Report on the establishment of a new facility in Kansai Science City submitted by the Research Committee to the Librarian.
Outline of the report
It is an urgent challenge that the libraries in Japan adapt to the changing environment at home and abroad and respond to the new information needs. The NDL needs to expand its functions to fulfill its missions efficiently on a nationwide basis. To achieve this, a Second National Diet Library (provisional name) should be built, providing an extensive space for storing documents and facilities for state-of-the-art library services using new technologies. The most suitable site for the Second NDL (provisional name) is the Keihanna Hill Area, which has been designated by the National Land Agency for Kansai Science City.
