You can request printed photocopies without visiting the NDL and have them delivered by courier or postal mail.
The photocopy fee is the total amount of items (A), (B), and (C), as shown below.
To calculate the total fee, after adding up all the fees excluding tax (packing fee and postage are also inclusive), impose the consumption tax on the net fee, and then round the sum down to a whole number.
- (A)Copying fee (unit price, excluding tax) times the total number of copies. The copying fee varies per copying method and paper size, as shown below.

* We do not charge consumption tax for copies which are to be shipped overseas.

Various copying methods are used depending on the materials to be copied. Please confirm the type of materials in the corresponding bibliographic information. Please note that the requested copying method or the copying service itself may not be available owing to the condition of materials or other reasons.

You can request photocopies without visiting the NDL and receive them by downloading PDF files.
The photocopy fee is the total amount of items (A) and (B), as shown below.
Please be aware that photocopies delivered to patrons who live in Japan will also have consumption tax added to the photocopy fees and rounded down to a whole number.
Patrons who live outside Japan will not be charged consumption tax.

The NDL will determine the copying methods based on the type of material. In general, PDF files will be in color except for copies from microfilm, microfiche, or monochrome images from the National Diet Library Digital Collections.

Compensation to copyright holders
Remote photoduplication received by downloading a PDF file is subject to the Rules on Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities,* which stipulate that the NDL pay compensation to copyright holders. This amount will be added to the amount you pay.
図書館等における複製及び公衆送信ガイドライン (Guidelines for Reproduction and Public Transmission in Libraries, etc.) stipulate a method for determining whether or not compensation is required based on the date of publication of copyrighted material. The NDL operates in compliance with this guideline.
* Rules on Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities (Japanese) were determined by the Society for Administration of Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities and approved by the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs on March 29, 2023. Compensation is based on Article 31, Paragraph 5 of the Copyright Act and paid to the Society for Administration of Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities (SARLIB).
