Using Bibliographic Data
Terms of Use for Bibliographic Data
Bibliographic data provided by the National Diet Library (*1) may be freely used on the condition that the user complies with provisions 1) to 4) below. Commercial use of the bibliographic data is also permitted.
Use of the bibliographic data constitutes agreement by the user with these terms of use for using the bibliographic data described herein (hereinafter referred to as "Terms of Use"). However, the user must comply with the terms and conditions of the source provider, including how to cite the source, for bibliographic data made by a third party and provided by the National Diet Library, which the National Diet Library obtains by links to the third party.
1) Source citation
- The user should cite the source when using the bibliographic data. Sources should be cited in the following manner:
(Examples of source citation)The user does not need to cite the source for each instance of bibliographic data attached to each material. In addition, there is no need to cite the source for data provided on the Free Data Service that is explicitly indicated as PDM.

Source: The National Diet Library bibliographic data (obtained on yyyy/mm/dd) - If you have edited the bibliographic data for use, you must include a statement expressing that the data has been edited, in addition to the abovementioned source citation. You must not make public or use edited information in a format that may be misconstrued as having been created by the National Diet Library.

2) No infringement of third party rights
- In some cases, a third party (a party other than the National Diet Library, hereinafter referred to as "Third Party") may hold the copyright or other rights to bibliographic data. When using bibliographic data in which names of right holders are indicated (example: summaries included in bibliographic data of children's books), the user must not delete the indication. Even if a Third Party holds the copyright to the bibliographic data, some use of the data, such as quoting, may be allowed without the consent of the copyright holder, under the Copyright Act of Japan.
- In some cases, terms and conditions other than the Terms of Use are established for services which provide the bibliographic data. You must confirm the information of these services (*2) which provide bibliographic data when using that data.
- Content such as images (including thumbnail images), videos and sounds displayed by URL written in bibliographic data, are not included in bibliographic data. You must get permission by copyright holders when using content, except for ones whose copyright is expired.
3) Disclaimer
- The National Diet Library bears absolutely no responsibility for any action taken by the user involving the use of the bibliographic data.
- The bibliographic data may be modified, moved or deleted without prior notice.
- Services which provide bibliographic data (*2) may be modified, suspended, or closed, due to circumstances of the National Diet Library.
4) Others
- The Terms of Use do not limit those types of use for which, under the Copyright Act of Japan, license from the right holders are not required.
- The Terms of Use apply from April 1, 2019. The Terms of Use may be modified in the future.
- The Terms of Use are compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0 (hereinafter referred to as the CC License). This means that bibliographic data based on the Terms of Use may be used under the CC License in lieu of the Terms of Use.
- *1 It includes authority data (data of authors and keywords which are arranged for use as clues when searching materials), index, and information of table of content, as well as general bibliographic data (information such as title, author, publisher, date of publication, etc.).
