September 30-October 3, 2024

International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Information Futures Summit 2024 was held in Brisbane, Australia. Ms. UWABO Yoshie (Director General, International Library of Children’s Literature) and Mr. KATO Yuhei (Assistant Director, Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) attended the event. They also attended the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) held on October 3. September 24, 2024

A symposium entitled "Building on the 'Digital Shift' - Implications for the future in the Library of Congress' new strategic plan" was held at the Tokyo Main Library of the National Diet Library (NDL) with Mr. J. Mark Sweeney, Principal Deputy Librarian of Congress, at the rostrum. Joining Mr. Sweeny for a subsequent panel discussion were Prof. TADANO Masahito, professor at the Hitotsubashi University Graduate School of Law, who acted as facilitator; Dr. KITSUREGAWA Masaru, president of the Research Organization of Information and Systems and professor at the University of Tokyo; Prof. MIZOUE Chieko, specially appointed professor at Kokushikan University and professor emeritus of the University of Tsukuba; and Mr. YAMAJI Yasushi, Deputy Director General of the National Diet Library. September 16-20, 2024

The 20th International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES 2024) was held in Ghent, Belgium, as well as online. Mr. KINOSHITA Takafumi (Research and Development for Next-Generation Systems Office, Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) attended the conference in person and Ms. MATSUDA Eri (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) participated online. Mr. KINOSHITA made a poster presentation entitled "The Migration of Optical Discs Book Supplements at the National Diet Library, Japan" (Poster: PDF: 222 KB]).

September 11-14, 2024

The 34th Conference of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS) was held in Sophia, Bulgaria, as well as online. Mr. MATSUZAKI Hiroki (Assistant Director, Service Planning Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) and Ms. INOUE Sachiko (Senior Librarian, Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) attended the conference in person. Mr. MATSUZAKI made a presentation entitled "National Diet Library Services for Providing Access to Digital Data of Library Materials" (Presentation file: [PDF: 160KB]) and Ms. INOUE made a presentation entitled "Overall Picture of Digitization and Text Conversion at the National Diet Library" (Presentation file: [PDF: 1.6MB]). H.E. Dr Ali bin Tamim, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), and H.E. Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, executive director of ALC, visited the NDL and donated books on the United Arab Emirates.

August 30-September 1, 2024

The 39th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) International Congress 2024 was held in Trieste, Italy. Mr. TSUBOI Nobuki (Children’s Services Division, International Library of Children's Literature) attended the conference.

August 6-9, 2024

The Digital Humanities Conference 2024 was held in Arlington, USA, as well as online. Ms. MURATA Yuna (Systems Infrastructure Division, Digital Information Department) participated online.

July 8-13, 2024

The 24th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of Korea (NLK) and the NDL was held in Seoul, Korea. Mr. OZAWA Kota (Director, Planning Division, Administrative Department) led a delegation of three NDL employees on their visit to Korea. The 25th International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) Centre General Assembly was held online. Ms. MITOBE Yumi (Director, Serials and Non-book Materials Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) participated in the assembly.

H.E. Mr. Drazen Hrastic, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Croatia to Japan, visited the NDL and donated Croatian Books.

April 24-26, 2024

The International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) General Assembly and Web Archiving Conference was held in Paris, France. Mr. ANDO Kazuhiro (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) attended the conference.

April 8-11, 2024

The Bologna Children's Book Fair was held in Bologna, Italy. Ms. FUKUI Chie (Assistant Director, Resources and Information Division, International Library of Children's Literature) attended the conference.

March 13-14, 2024

The Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL), and the meeting of the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) were held in Seattle, USA. Mr. FUKUBAYASHI Yasuhiro (Director, Business, Science and Technology Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) and Mr. AOIKE Toru (Research and Development for Next-Generation Systems Office, Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) attended the conferences. Mr. AOIKE made a presentation entitled "New Developments in Digital Services at the National Diet Library: OCR Text and Machine Learning" (Presentation file: [PDF: 2.39MB]) .
