Studies FY2003

The themes of studies FY2003 are as follows:

We researched the number of packaged digital publications by category, which belonged to the Electronic Resources Division, Public Services Department of the NDL, and tested the usability of sample publications. 200 digital materials acquired before FY1999 were tested to see if they worked on one of the latest operating systems (Windows XP, Mac OS X). Usability problems were found in nearly 70% of them.

We researched the outline of precedent systems outside Japan that are compatible with OAIS, to help design a long-term preservation system for the NDL. We also researched metadata schemata adoptable for the preservation system.

We gave thought to an outline of the NDL guideline for long-term preservation by reference to the UNESCO guideline.

Results of the studies are summarized in the “Study Report on Ensuring Long-term Preservation and Accessibility of Digital Information”.

In addition, we translated a draft report of National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIPP), the world’s biggest digital preservation project, implemented in the U.S. We also held two conferences of specialists who were engaged in activities or studies relating to digital preservation in various areas.
