The National Library of Malaysia (NLM) is the driving force and leader of the national reading promotion program for the library sector and is always committed to coordinating and implementing continuous, aggressive, creative, and integrated reading promotion programs and activities.
The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is not an obstacle for the NLM to continue implementing various reading promotion programs that are adapted to the new normal environment through online platforms. The Reading Nation Program 2021 is organized by the National Library of Malaysia to promote and encourage reading culture among the Malaysian community.
The list of programs under the 2021 Reading Nation Program 2021 is as follows:
- Book Lover
- Malaysian Family Reading Competition
- National Active Reader Award 2020
- Book Travelogue
Book Lover
The Book Lovers Program provides a space and platform for book lovers among writers and leaders to share their reading materials with the general public. Writers are invited to review books in various subjects and genres. Among the book lovers invited are famous novelists (Ain Masarah) and poets (Dr. Raja Rajeswari Seetha Raman).
Malaysian Family Reading Competition
NLM organized the Malaysian Family Reading Competition involving mother and child or father and child. This pair of parents and children will work hand in hand to prepare book reviews from the books they read and present them in the form of creative video recordings. The Malaysian Family Reading Competition starts on 28 July to 20 August 2021.
National Active Reader Award 2020
NLM took the initiative to organizing the 2020 National Active Reader Award to give recognition to the Malaysian community, that supports reading culture. The award is given by the National Library of Malaysia to individuals who borrow the most books for a period of one year in 2020. Nominations are obtained through each state public library, rural library, and public library in Malaysia.
Book Travelogue
The Book Travelogue program is based on the concept of a talk show and is organized as a platform for sharing experiences, inspiration, and aspirations about reading by an invited panel consisting of prominent readers in Malaysia. This program also covers issues regarding reading in Malaysia and how reading culture can be improved among the Malaysian community to create a nation of readers by 2030 through the National Decade of Reading Movement.
